DIY LEGO Minifigure Mason Jar Lamp + LEGO Brick Lampshade

How to make a LEGO Minifigure Mason Jar Lamp LEGO Brick Lampshade
Have a LEGO enthusiast in the house? We do!

Our older son is absolutely enamored with all things LEGO, as are most boys his age. We are working on updating some of the decor in his room, and I thought I would try my hand at making him a DIY LEGO Minifigure lamp with a LEGO Brick Lampshade.

This idea was hatched a few weeks ago when I spotted a super simple mason jar lid lamp adapter at A.C. Moore.

I had a 50% off coupon from the website, and it only wound up costing around $6.50 after the coupon was applied. How could I pass up a deal like that? Add a Mason Jar, some multi-surface paint, 3 fat quarters of primary color fabric, a lampshade and some puffy paint (to make all of those little LEGO bricks on the lampshade) and you have a pretty neat DIY LEGO lamp and LEGO Brick Lampshade. Total cost to make this? Just under $20  all-in!
This project doesn't take a ton of time either. It only took me about an hour and a half (minus the drying time for the paint and fabric glue) to complete. Check out the full supply list and how-to below.

What you'll need:

  • A paint brush
  • A pencil
  • Popsicle stick
  • Scissors
  • Fabric Glue (a clear formula)
  • Red, yellow and blue fat quarters of fabric (we found ours at Walmart for $1 each).
  • Mason Jar
  • Mason Jar Lamp Lid Adapter Kit (we found ours at A.C.Moore - this is what it looks like  - ours is Nicole Crafts brand)

  • Yellow, black and white multi-surface paint (we use Americana brand)
  • Red, yellow, and blue "puffy paint" also called "3D Fabric Paint"
  • 1 or 2 LEGO bricks (to trace for your lampshade)
  • 1 Small white fabric lampshade
  • 1 smooth surface mason jar (we found ours at A.C.Moore - Nicole brand)

How To:

  • Begin by painting your mason jar yellow with your multi-surface paint. Paint the lid of your mason jar lid lamp adapter yellow as well (we taped off the stem of the lamp to prevent painting the stem - paint yours to preference. Allow adequate time for drying in-between coats. It took 3 coats of paint to cover our jar and lid adapter.
  • Next, print the image below of the minifigure face. Once printed, cut to size and outline + color over the image (just the eyes, eyebrows and mouth) with a pencil. Once covered with pencil, place your mason jar on it's side and align the face on your mason jar  (the side that you colored with pencil should be facing inward/on the surface of the jar). Holding the image firmly in place, rub the entire backside of the image with a Popsicle stick (don't rub too hard though as it could affect the paint on the mason jar). This should transfer the pencil image of the minifigure face.
  • Next, simply use the pencil outline as a guide and paint your mini-figure eyes, mouth, and eyebrows black. Make sure to paint around the small inner circles of the eyes. Go back after the black paint has dried and paint the inner circles of the eyes white. Allow adequate time for drying.
  • Once dry, attach the mason jar lid lamp adapter to your mason jar. Set aside.
  • Next, lay all of your fat primary fat quarters of fabric out (color side down - white un-printed side should be facing up). Trace the outline of your LEGO bricks using your pencil on the white un-printed side of the fabric. Repeat until you have the desired amount of bricks to completely cover your lampshade. We used 150 (I traced the 2 x 8 bricks and used 8 1x1 bricks to fill in the small space that was left on the seam of the lampshade.)
  • Using your fabric glue (we used Fabric Fusion - however, any clear formula will do) place enough glue on each fabric "brick" to secure it to the lampshade. Make sure that all edges have a sufficient amount of glue to prevent curling or gaping. Repeat this step until your entire lampshade is covered with your fabric LEGO bricks. Allow Adequate time for drying.
  • Next, using your red, yellow, and blue puffy paint, create the "pegs" on each fabric LEGO Brick by squeezing out small individual dots of paint (this is a super simple process with puffy paint - don't be intimidated!) . Use the LEGO bricks that you used as a guide as to how many "pegs" you put on each brick. Work your way around the lampshade until each LEGO brick is complete. Allow adequate time for drying.
Put a bulb in your completed LEGO Minifigure Lamp, and place your completed LEGO Brick lampshade on your lamp. Find a fun place to display, and ENJOY!
