Hi, friends! While I know that Halloween is still a ways off, the seasonal items {such as these foam craft  pumpkins} tend to fly off the shelves at Dollar Tree far before you're ready to start thinking about Halloween! So, while I was browsing the seasonal section with my daughter last week, I decided to grab up a few while they still had them, to do a fun kids craft project. These little DIY owl pumpkins are super cute, and only cost about $2 each to make!

Easy Dollar Tree Foam Pumpkin Makeover Owl Pumpkins Kids Craft Tutorial

What you'll need:

  • Foam craft pumpkins (found at Dollar Tree)
  • Felt in your choices of colors (found at most craft stores for about .39c each for a 8x10 sheet)
  • Mult-surface paint or chalk paint, in your choice of colors
  • Sponge brushes (they work best when applying paint to the foam surface of these pumpkins)
  • Scissors
  • All-purpose craft glue
  • Permanent makers in your choice of colors


How to:

  1. To start, paint the surface of your foam pumpkins with multipurpose craft paint/chalk paint using your sponge brushes. Set aside to dry. Apply a second coat of paint if needed. Allow adequate time for drying. 
  2. Using your felt, Cut out wings, a belly (soft upside down heart shape), eyes, and a beak for each pumpkin.
  3. Use your permanent markers to add designs (optional) to the felt shapes, and centers of the eyes.
  4. Next, use your multipurpose craft glue to affix your owl's wings, belly, eyes and beak to your painted pumpkins. Allow adequate time for drying. 
  5. Optional: Complete your owl pumpkins by adding fun designs around their eyes, using permanent markers (see imagery above and below). Allow time for your permanent pen designs to set/dry (10-15 minutes).
  6. Display your Owl pumpkins, and enjoy!
