Minion Mini Canvas DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments + Bring Home Despicable Me 3 For The Holidays!

This post is in partnership with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. All opinions are my own.

Despicable Me 3 has landed on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray, DVD, On-Demand and Digital! We caught it in the theater as a family back in the summer, and we all agree - this is the very BEST movie in the Despicable Me trilogy {though we honestly LOVE them all!} If you're looking for a laugh out loud flick that the entire family can enjoy, this is the perfect pick! It would also make a great stocking stuffer or holiday gift idea. Pop a copy of Despicable Me 3 along with a few bags of microwave popcorn, some movie candy, and some soda into a stocking or a gift basket, and you'll have a fun family movie night at-the-ready, this holiday season!

After we all watched Despicable Me 3 this past weekend, the kids officially caught Minion fever again! These little yellow guys are just so stinking cute {and funny!} My oldest daughter was brainstorming a DIY Minion Christmas tree ornament, and she came up with these super cute Minion Mini Canvas DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments. Aren't they adorable?! She gathered some of the supplies that we had left over from making our Mini Canvas Snowman Ornaments, and a few other simple supplies from our craft stash, and got to work. I love how they turned out! Another fun memory / addition to our family Christmas tree!

Read on for the simple supply list, and for our quick tutorial on how to make your own Minion Mini Canvas DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments, this holiday season.

Minion Mini Canvas DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments How-To

What you'll need:
  • A copy of Despicable Me 3 {Seriously, you have to see this movie! SO funny!}
  • Scissors
  • A low-temp hot glue gun and glue sticks (a parent should complete the steps that require the glue gun for this craft or supervise older children very closely!)
  • A 4"x 4" Mini Canvas (we found ours at A.C. Moore)
  • 12" of ribbon
  • Brown, black, white, and blue felt.
  • Yellow tempera paint {we always use Kwik Stix fast drying Tempera paint sticks. They dry super fast in 90 seconds}
  • A small mason jar lid / jar lid
  • A mini stocking (refer to image below) or mini Santa hat - we used a mini stocking because it's what we had on-hand.
  • Optional - a cotton ball to create the ball on the end of your Santa hat if you are using a mini stocking to create your Santa hat.

How to:

  1. Paint your mini canvas yellow - set to the side. Allow adequate time for drying.
  2. Using your jar lid as your guide, cut a white circle sized to fit inside the jar lid.
  3. Using your felt, cut a small brown circle for the center of your Minion's eye.
  4. Using your felt, cut a small black circle (slightly smaller than your brown circle).
  5. Using a low-temp hot glue gun, glue the white felt inside the jar lid. Glue the smaller brown felt circle into the center of the white felt circle, and last glue the small black felt circle into the center of the brown felt circle.
  6. Cut a 1"H x 4"W strip of black felt (for your Minion "goggle" strap)
  7. Cut a blue piece of felt roughly 1"H x 4"W (with small indents on either end for your Minion "overall" straps).
  8. Now it's time to assemble your Minion Mini Canvas ornament. Glue the blue felt to the front side / bottom of your mini canvas.
  9. Glue your black felt strip about 2" from the top of your mini canvas (refer to images above and below).
  10. Glue your jar lid / Minion eye with "goggle" to the center of the black felt strip on your mini canvas.
  11. Last, it's time to add your Minion's "Santa" hat. If you're using an actual mini Santa hat, simply use a few dabs of hot glue to secure it around the top of your mini canvas, and tie a small ribbon to the top of the Santa Hat (with a slip knot loop for hanging). If you are using a mini stocking to create a Santa hat (like we did!) simply cut along the seam of the mini stocking (from the top to the "toe" of the stocking). Add a few dabs of hot glue to secure the fluffy white band around the top of your mini canvas. "father the material at the top, and tie off with ribbon (with a slip knot loop for hanging). Fold the top of the gathered portion of your stocking hat over, and glue to the left (or right) side of the mini canvas (to create the look of a droopy/folded Santa hat). Add a small dab of hot glue, and the cotton ball to the end of your Santa hat).
Hang your completed Minion Mini Canvas DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments on your tree and enjoy, or gift to someone special!
