When our daughter was diagnosed with Celiac disease when she was 6 years old, I didn't foresee the massive lifestyle change that would occur for all of us as a family. Going completely gluten free, literally overnight, was certainly a learning experience. She gets very sick even when there are trace amounts of gluten in food so we have to be incredibly careful with all of the food choices that we make, and how we prepare food in our home. Most fast-food and other dining options have become non-options, simply because they prepare food in kitchens/fryers that contain gluten. So when we head out with the kids we tend to bring our own food and snacks along.
Going gluten free wasn't as simple as ridding our cabinet of bread. It was an undertaking; there are so many ingredients that contain gluten! Now, almost two years later, I can say that we've finally hit a stride with her gluten-free lifestyle. She has memorized key ingredients that she knows make her sick, and she's found a few staple go-to favorites for snack and meal time.
Whether your out and about or at home, these are some delicious healthy gluten free snack ideas that kids love:
- Banana slices or apple slices with hazelnut spread for dipping - use disposable condiment cups with lids to take the spread with you on-the-go.
- Yoplait® yogurt at home and Yoplait® Go-GURT® on-the-go.
- Corn Tortilla chips and fresh homemade salsa.
- Hard boiled Egg
- String cheese
- Rice cake with peanut butter
- Natural popcorn lightly salted.
- Homemade Popsicle's made with your favorite fresh fruits & fruit juice.
We have been spending much of the summer on-the-go; most of our days are spent at the pool. My older kids love swimming, and my toddler absolutely loves anything to do with water!
It's easy to keep them cool too! We just pop the entire box in the freezer and freeze them, then we stash it in our cooler. It keeps everything in the cooler cold and by the time the kids are ready for a snack, they are thawed and ready to go!
