Our older kids went to see it on opening night and absolutely LOVED it! After seeing the movie, my oldest daughter wanted to craft some DIY Detective Pikachu room decor, so we came up with this fun detective Pikachu Mini Canvas craft. It's so simple to put together, and easy enough that the kids can paint it on their own. For younger kids that aren't confident with free-hand painting, you can simply print out our free Detective Pikachu mini canvas template below, and use it as a guide. This Detective Pikachu kids craft only requires a handful of simple supplies and costs around $5 to make. How to:

  1. Print our free template HERE. Trace the template (pressing hard while tracing) using a pencil. Set to the side.
  2. Paint the mini canvas yellow. Allow adequate time for drying.
  3. Place the template on the painted mini canvas (pencil side down.) Trace over the outline of the template from the back-side. Press fairly firm while tracing. This will transfer the graphite onto the canvas, creating a pencil outline / guide of the facial features for your Pikachu mini canvas.
  4. Using a fine paintbrush, paint the eyes black (make sure to leave the two small center circles empty. Paint the small triangle nose black. Outline the mouth with black. Allow adequate time for the paint to dry. Fill in the two small circles in the eyes, using a fine paint brush and white paint. Paint the two large "cheek" circles red. Fill the back of the mouth in with maroon paint. Paint the tongue pink. Allow adequate time for the paint to dry.
  5. Using scissors and yellow felt, cut two oblong ears. Using scissors and black felt, cut two black tips for the ears.(refer to imagery above and below.) Add a few dabs of hot glue to the secure the black felt tips to the tops of both of the yellow felt ear pieces. Set to the side.
  6. To create a hat for your Detective Pikachu mini canvas, use a craft knife to cut the 3" Styrofoam ball in half. Once complete, halve that piece. This piece will be the form for the hat. Cover with brown felt (cut to size then secure with hot glue.) Add details, such as side ear flaps (turned up) and a small felt "button"  and an ear flap tie or bow to the top center. Create the hat brim using a semi-circle piece of felt (we doubled the felt up and hot glued it together to create a thicker appearance to the hat brim.
  7. Finish your Detective Pikachu mini canvas by gluing your completed felt ears and hat to your canvas. Make sure to hold each piece in place firmly until hot glue dries/sets. Make sure to use large generous dabs of hot glue when adding felt ears and hat to your mini canvas.
Hang your completed Detective Pikachu mini canvas and enjoy, or gift it to someone special!

The world of Pokémon comes to life! The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time.
Fans everywhere can now experience Pikachu on the big screen as never before, as a talking detective Pikachu, a Pokémon like no other. The film also showcases a wide array of beloved Pokémon characters, each with its own unique abilities and personality. The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe. “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” also stars Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) as Tim; Kathryn Newton (“Lady Bird,” TV’s “Big Little Lies”) as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story; and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“Godzilla,” “The Last Samurai”) as Lt. Yoshida.
