Are You Getting Enough Calcium During Pregnancy?

You'd think that after having three children, the fourth pregnancy would be a breeze, right? I should be a pro by now! I'm not though. Every pregnancy truly is different. I had my first child 11 {almost 12} years ago, and  recommendations from health professionals are ever-changing. Honestly, it can be difficult to keep up with it all! Especially when you have large gaps between each pregnancy.

While I'm trying my best to stay on top of the latest list of pregnancy do's and don'ts this time around, there's one {vital} daily nutritional recommendation during pregnancy that remains steadfast; Calcium.

Calcium intake during pregnancy is crucial. Baby's bones, teeth, heart, nerves, and muscles depend on calcium for growth. It's so essential to fetal growth, that if you don't include enough in your diet, your baby will actually start draining it from your bones. This isn't a good scenario for you or baby! The daily recommended value for calcium intake when pregnant {AND when not},  is 1000 mg daily. While you may think that your prenatal vitamins have you covered in this department, most do not. In fact, most prenatal vitamins only contain 20-30% of the daily recommended value of calcium that your body, and your growing baby need.

You may think that this is easy to squeeze into your diet however, many expecting women still miss the mark on calcium intake each day. My daily calcium intake has honestly been questionable at times during this pregnancy. I had a very difficult time holding down food and liquid during the first few months, and some of the same issues have resurfaced over the past few weeks. While a huge portion of my diet is currently comprised of healthy smoothies {which are easier for me to keep down/ digest},  adding a Calcium supplement to my daily routine was a no-brainer for me. Viactiv® Calcium Soft Chews are a delectable way for me to make sure that I'm getting the Calcium that the baby and I need. They come in two delicious flavors {milk chocolate and caramel},  and they pack 100% of the daily recommended value into just two chews {plus Vitamin D and K}. They come individually wrapped too. So, I can easily toss a few in my purse or diaper bag and take them with me on the go, or I can simply take them first thing in the morning with my other vitamins.

Truth? While I do forget to take my vitamins on occasion, I haven't forgotten to take my Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews since I started incorporating them into my daily routine. Seriously, they taste great! While I love both of the available flavors, I'm a chocolate lover. So, milk chocolate is definitely my favorite out of the two!

In addition to staying on-top of my calcium intake and diet this time around. I'm also making a concentrated effort to get outside and get active with the kids each day; I aim for 60 minutes a day.

Having experienced pregnancy a few times now, I may not be a pro, but I do know firsthand how these small daily efforts can make a BIG difference!
