Halloween Yogurt Covered Pretzels Recipe

Have you seen some of the cute Halloween themed covered pretzels tutorials that are floating around on Pinterest and Facebook? After seeing a tutorial in my timeline, I considered grabbing all of the supplies from the craft store to make some with the kids. But then I thought about all of the unhealthy ingredients in candy wafers {hydrogenated oil and artificial flavors particularly} and I set out to make a healthier alternative.

We made these adorable {delicious} yogurt covered pumpkin and mummy themed Halloween pretzels last night and they were definitely a big hit -the kids loved them!

Grab the super simple recipe and instructions to make your own Halloween Pumpkin and Mummy Yogurt Covered Pretzels, below.

Pumpkin & Mummy Yogurt Covered Pretzels Recipe

Yields: about 30 yogurt covered pretzels (about 15 mummy pretzels and 15 pumpkin pretzels)

What you'll need:
  • Wax paper and a cookie sheet to dry your yogurt covered pretzels on
  • Toothpicks or a fork to drizzle extra yogurt coating on your mummy pretzels
  • A double boiler and saucepan
  • Mini pretzel twists (you can easily make these gluten free with Glutino mini pretzel twists.)
  • Natural orange food coloring (we used Color Garden natural plant based orange food coloring for the pumpkin yogurt covered pretzels)
  • Green M&Ms (for the tops of the pumpkin pretzels
  • Sugar googly eyes (for the mummy pretzels)
  • 4 ounces of cream cheese softened
  • 6 cups of sifted confectioners sugar
  • 4 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate (morsels or in bar form)

How to:
Start by lining your cookie sheet with wax paper. Set to the side. Next take out your double boiler, fill it and place it on the stove. Once the water has come to a boil, place cream cheese, confectioners sugar, yogurt and vanilla into the saucepan on the double boiler. Stir until all ingredients are melted /combined (be sure that you don't overheat the mixture - you want it to melt but not get too hot).

Start by making your mummy pretzels in the white mixture. Simply drop your mini pretzel twists into the mixture - once your pretzels are completely coated, use tongs to remove them from the mixture (gently shaking off excess as you remove them). Place them on your wax paper lined cookie sheet. Use a fork or toothpick to drizzle additional yogurt coating on your mummy pretzels. While still wet, place two sugar eyes on the tops of each mummy pretzel.

To make your pumpkin pretzels. Add a small amount of your natural orange food coloring to the remaining mixture and return the saucepan to the double boiler. Allow the mixture to warm again, for a few minutes, making sure to stir the mixture consistently. Once warm, remove the orange mixture from the double boiler and repeat the steps outlined above to coat your pretzels. While still wet, add one green M&M to the top of each of your pumpkin pretzels (refer to images above). Once all of your pretzels are complete, place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator. Allow yogurt coating to dry/harden for 20-30 minutes. Serve & Enjoy!

With the use of natural ingredients, these covered pretzels offer up a healthier alternative to pretzels covered with melted candy wafers. They obviously still contain sugar however, this recipe eliminates the unhealthy hydrogenated oil and artificial flavoring that is present in candy wafers.
